PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high reduction ratio flat square insulated wire and establish a manufacturing method therefor excellent in the electrical insulating characteristics and abrasive resistance and favorable when used in a wire material for edgewise wound coil. SOLUTION: A circular insulated wire 11 formed by applying a conductor 12 having a circular section with an insulating coating layer 13 is subjected to a rolling process so that the ratio of thickness to width is from 1:5 to 1:30, and a flat square insulated electric wire 4 consisting of a flat square conductor 2 and an insulating layer 3 is formed, followed by providing an insulation reinforcing coating layer 5 to reinforce a degraded insulating layer of a width direction flat surface on the wire 4, and an abrasive resistant insulating coating layer 6 is applied to the whole peripheral surface of the wire 4 furnished with reinforcing coating layer 5.
