PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen the color irregularity of projected images. SOLUTION: The projection type display device 10 has an illumination optical system 100, a color light separation optical system 200, a relay optical system 220, reflection mirror 218, two field lenses 240, 242, three liquid crystal panels 250, 252, 254, a cross dichroic prism 260 and a projection lens system 270. In such a case, the foci of the field lenses 240, 242 are set nearer a light source 110 side than the center of a second lens array and the focus of the field lens 234 is set nearer the illumination optical system 100 side than the center of a relay lens 232.
