<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an edge emitting cold cathode field electron element having an electron emission part with improved mechanical strength, and capable of lowering drive voltage. SOLUTION: In this cold cathode field electron emission element, a first gate electrode layer 11, a first insulating layer 12, an electron emission layer 13, a second insulating layer 14, and a second gate electrode layer 15 are piled up on a supporting body in this order, and an aperture 16 running from the second gate electrode layer 15 to the surface of the first gate electrode layer 11 is provided. Then, electrons are emitted from end parts of the electron emission layer 13 projecting from wall surfaces of the aperture 16. Here, the shape of the section of the electron emission layer 13 is an irregular shape when at least a part of the end parts of the electron emission layer 13 is cut in a plane orthogonal to the extending direction of the end parts of the electron emission layer 13.</p> |
