PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently using a buffer memory of a tape drive. SOLUTION: Interface logic of a tape storage processes the data when it receives the data and forms a processed data block of a size smaller than the size of an original unprocessed data block. While receiving the element of the data block, the interface logic decides repeatedly a free memory capacity of the buffer memory, if the free memory capacity is lower than a prescribed threshold value, a block transfer is stopped temporarily. The block transfer is restarted when the free memory capacity becomes the threshold value or above. Thus, the need of executing complex calculation for estimating the size of the processed data block is eliminated, and the overflow of the buffer memory is prevented, and almost all memories are used effectively.
