PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the position and quantity of a wear step of a work roll from its roll profile. SOLUTION: Variation in primary differential value and variation in secondary differential value are found from the measured roll profile to the overall length of the roll profile (steps A2, A3). The multiplication value of the primary differential value and secondary differential value is found to the overall roll profile length (step A4). The primary differential value and the multiplication result in the step A are evaluated from the center position of the roll profile to the right and left end parts, to decide as a wear step start position the position where the primary differential value is larger than a specific threshold, the multiplication result obtained in the step A4 is larger than the specific threshold and as a wear step end position the position where the primary differential value is less than the specific threshold (step A5). The wear step quantity is found as the difference between the roll profile values corresponding to the wear start position and wear end position from the positions.
