A traffic control system (3) for controlling vehicles (2) running on a toll road (1) comprises communication devices (20) provided on vehicles (2) and communication devices (30) provided on tollgates (10) for the entrance to and exit from the toll road (1). The tollgates (10) includes communication gates (30A) and check gates (30B). The communications between the devices on the tollgates and vehicles allow tollage without the intervention of manual procedures or tickets. The check gates (30B) may stop vehicles with inoperative communication devices from entering.
