A new catalyst for polymerizing olefin or styrene is prepared by contacting (A) a transition metal compound, (B) a compound which reacts with oxygen-containing compounds and/or transition metal compounds and forms an ionic complex, and optionally, (C) an alkylation chemical; contacting them with (D) an adsorbing material; then removing the adsorbing material.
