A ferroelectric liquid crystal display has a ferroelectric liquid crystal sandwiched between a pair of substrates. A drive waveform has a reset period including a switching period and a nonswitching period before a selection pulse is applied. For the switching period, a voltage exceeding a threshold voltage necessary for switching the ferroelectric liquid crystal is applied during the switching period irrespective of the display data to be written in pixels. During the nonswitching period, the ion electric field of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is so oriented that the ion electric field cancels the electric field of spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystal molecules. The voltage applied during the nonswitching period does not exceed the threshold voltage of the ferroelectric liquid crystal, and is preferably 0 V, i.e., no voltage is applied.
|
