Drive motor (10) control (15) is local. Only those deviations from the profile of desired values which cannot be overcome locally, are reported to a centralized control unit (MC). An Independent claim is included for the apparatus for the above process. Each drive is a structural unit comprising the drive motor (10) and local control unit dedicated to its operation. Preferred Features: The report is an error signal, leading to intervention by the central machine control. An external measurement system (16) reports the actual state of the unit driven by the motor to the local controller. Controls (15) local to drives are interconnected for communication. Reporting to central machine control only takes place when departures arising, can no longer be governed locally. During such reporting, drives exchange measured information, and if necessary, desired value profiles, for common evaluation and to make mutual comparisons.
