2-(2-Pyridyl)-quinoline, 2-(2-pyridyl)-5H or 7H-(1)-pyrindine, 2-(5H- or 7H-(1)-pyrindinyl)-quinoline, bi-2-5H- or 7H-(1)-pyrindine or 2-(2-7H-(1)-pyrindinyl)-5H-(1)-pyrindine compounds (I) are used in the detection and/or determination of proteins in aqueous solution. The use of one or more bi-heterocyclic compounds of formula X-Y (I) is claimed in the detection and/or determination of proteins in aqueous solution. X, Y = 2-pyridyl, 2-quinolyl, 2-(5H)-pyrindinyl or 2-(7H)-pyrindinyl group of formula (II)-(V) respectively, provided that X and Y are not both (II) or both (III); R (same or different) = H, halo, OH, 1-6C alkyl (optionally substituted by one or more of =O, COOH or OH), NO2, CN, NH2, SH, Ph, benzyl, 1-6C alkoxy, (1-6C) alkoxycarbonyl, -CH (sic), CHO, COOH, SO2T, SO3T, SO4T, SOT, PO2T, PO3T, PO4T, -CO2-halogen or mono- or disaccharide residue; T = H, halo or 1-6C alkyl (optionally substituted by one or more of =O, COOH or OH). Independent claims are included for: (1) a system for the detection and/or determination of proteins on surfaces, consisting of test strips on a carrier, an absorbent porous shaped article (containing aqueous ethanolic surfactant solution) on one end of the test carrier and a reagent vessel containing an indicator solution which comprises (i) 100 volume parts of an aqueous reagent solution adjusted to pH 12 with sodium hydroxide, containing 0.4-2.0 wt. % of at least one compound (I), 0.4-1.0 wt. % disodium monohydrogen phosphate and 99.2-97.0 wt. % bidistilled water and (ii) 1-2 volume parts of 4 wt. % copper sulfate pentahydrate solution; and (2) the use of the system as in (1) for the detection and/or determination of proteins on surfaces, by (a) impregnating a test strip, having one end in the absorbent article, with the surfactant solution, (b) wiping the test surface with the article, (c) immersing the strip and article in the indicator solution and (d) colorimetrically testing the indicator solution at 490-522 nm for quantitative protein determination or (d') comparing the indicator solution with a color testing chart showing various colors for qualitative protein detection or semi-quantitative determination.
