[Class 110 (i).] A multi-stage centrifugal pump which is arranged vertically and driven by an electric motor, has a plate keyed to the pump shaft upon which the delivery water pressure acts to raise the pump and motor shafts off the bottom thrust bearing. The pump 9 delivers water, from an inlet 19, through conduits 20, 21, to an outlet 22. Part of the delivery water enters a chamber 24 and presses upon the side of a plate 14 and causes the pump shaft 4 to be lifted off the thrust bearing 6. The motor shaft 3 is connected to the pump shaft by a flexible coupling 5. The stator 8 dips into an oil, or other insulating fluid, bath and is insulated from the rotor by a cylindrical partition 13. Water leaking past the plate 14 enters a chamber 17 and acts as a lubricant by passing through grooves in the plain bearings 11, 11<1>. This water afterwards passes through the air gap between the rotor 7 and stator 8 for cooling purposes and afterwards through grooves in the bearing 11<2>. The discharge of this water is regulated by a needle valve, or alternately, a needle valve may be provided in the chamber 17. The electric motor may be situated on the suction side of the pump. The electric motor may be replaced by another form of motor.
