A probe, e.g. for monitoring of the body, taking of samples, etc., is positioned by advancing a stylet (30) along flexible tubing extending along channel 9 and into a patient's tissue, withdrawing the stylet and introducing the probe. In the case of a cranial bolt 20, for example, the apparatus may be fixed in place by means of adapter 1 wherein bolt 20 and adapter 1 are attached by means of threaded member 6. A cross-hole 10 enables removal of the flexible tube after placement of the probe by splitting the tube along lines of weakness on the tube wall. Shutter 12 is movable to expose or cover cross-hole 10 for removal of the tube or formation of a fluid tight seal respectively.
