The developer is used to develop colour photographic elements, e.g. colour photographic papers. Rapid development, e.g. less than 25 seconds, is aided by the presence of a selectively diffusible reagent, such as a development inhibitor. The developer inhibitor, preferably comprises two active inhibitor (INH) groups, for example heterocyclic rings which include mercapto (-SH), seleno (-SeH), or Telluro (-Th) groups, linked through a leaving group (LG) to a linking group (LINK). The development inhibitor diffuses into the top layer of the multi-colour material, and leads to more uniform development of the three colour records within the photographic element. The diffusion characteristics of the development inhibitor are carefully designed to allow diffusion into the top layer of the photographic element, e.g. the red-sensitive emulsion layer of colour paper.
