PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To load a gear to be ground to a prescribed position at high speed for engagement by providing a positioning auxiliary means having a rack which is engaged with a gear to be ground and temporarily positions the gear to be ground to a clamp member in a gear holder. SOLUTION: A positioning clamp member 31 is retreated in a gear change position M2, the restraint to a gear G to be ground is released, and the gear G to be ground is exchanged. When a new gear G to be ground is arranged in a gear holder 29, a positioning auxiliary means 28 is operated so that a rack 34 is engaged with the gear G to be ground in the gear holder 29. Sequentially, the positioning clamp member 31 is forwarded to the gear holder 29 and the gear G to be ground is positioned. A rotating element 39 is rotated 180 deg. and the gear G to be ground positioned in the gear holder 29 by a positioning clamp member 31 is moved to a working position M1.
