PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition which decreases a driving voltage, improves temperature dependence thereof and achieves rapid response by making the composition contain a liquid crystalline component comprising a compound having naphthalene-2,6-diyl as a part component, a compound having dielectric constant anisotropy of not less than a specific value and a compound having dielectric constant anisotropy in a specific range. SOLUTION: This composition comprises a liquid crystalline component (A) comprising compounds represented by formulas I-III, 0-99.0 wt.% of a liquid crystalline component (B) comprising compounds having dielectric constant anisotropy of not less than +2 and a liquid crystalline component (C) comprising compounds having dielectric constant anisotropy of -10-+2 wherein the sum of the components (B) and (C) is 0-99.9 wt.% of the composition. The content of the compound represented by formula I is 5-100 wt.% of the component A (R11-R12 are each a 1-10C alkyl or the like; X11-X13 are each F, Cl or the like; Y11-Y19 are each H, CN or the like; W111-W136 are each H, F or the like; Z11-Z18 are each -COO-, -CH2O- or the like; rings A11-A15 are each 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or the like).
