PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the novel subject compound having 2 benzene rings between 2 (meth)acryl groups, useful as a polymerizable monomer and capable of presenting a hardened material excellent in mechanical strengths. SOLUTION: This novel (meth)acrylate compound is expressed by formula I (R is H or methyl), e.g. 4-(3-methacryloxy-2-hydroxypropoxy)phenyl-4'-(3- methacryloxy-2-hydroxypropoxy)benzoate. The compound of formula I is obtained, e.g. by addition reacting 2 chemical equivalent of (meth)acrylic acid of formula III with hydroxyphenyl hydroxybenzoate diglycidyl ether of formula II. The reaction is preferably carried out under an inactive gas atmosphere and using a quaternary ammonium salt such as benzyltrimethylammonium chloride or the like as a catalyst at 30-160 deg.C for 1-100 hours of the reaction. The compound of formula I is useful as a raw material for various molding materials, coating materials, etc.
