PURPOSE: A polymer composition obtained from multifunctional monomers is provided which has physical properties suitable for use as spacers in liquid crystal display devices. CONSTITUTION: Polymer particles comprise copolymers of 1 to 30% by weight of a multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer and 70 to 99% by weight of a multifunctional aromatic monomer and have a particle size of 1 to 15 micrometer, a standard deviation of less than 4% of an average diameter and a recovery rate of more than 35%. Also described are methods of improving compression characteristics of (meth)acrylate polymer particles by copolymerizing a multifunctional (meth)acrylate monomer with a multifunctional aromatic monomer. The particles are of a size and uniformity, and contain physical characteristics that make them ideally suitable for use as spacers in liquid crystal display devices. |
