PURPOSE: Cinnamic acid derivatives inhibit deposition of atherosclerosis disk by accumulation of macrophage-lipid complexes on artery epithelial cells, decrease the concentration of cholesterol and neutral lipid in blood and GOT and GPT serum, inhibit fatty liver and protect liver function. CONSTITUTION: Provided is a pharmaceutical composition or food and beverage composition which contains cinnamic acid derivatives or salts thereof with carriers. Cinnamic acid represented by formula 1a and 1b, wherein R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are independently hydrogen, hydroxy, or C1-C4alkoxy group; R6 is C5-C7cycloalkyl group having substituted groups selected from hydrogen, C1-C4alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy or carboxyl group; are extracted from apple, tea, potato, coffee, strawberry, blueberry, cherry, plum, grape or a kind of nut, or chemically synthesized. Cinnamic acid derivatives formulated as medicine and food additives which are useful for prevention and treatment of diseases such as artherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, angina and apoplexy.
