PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary damper which can improve sealed properties when viscous liquid is compressed by a vane and can exhibit large braking force even when viscous liquid having a low viscosity is used, and also has small braking force when a rotary shaft is rotated in a braking force non- exhibiting direction. SOLUTION: This rotary damper is equipped with a rotary shaft 3 arranged along the axial center of a easing 2, and a vane 4 whose flat surface is an approximately T-shape having an engaging projection 42 which can be engaged having looseness with a groove part (clearance between the end parts 30c of the forked parts 30e of the projection 30 of the rotary shaft 3) formed in the rotary shaft 3 and also having a circular arc part 41 whose peripheral surface is brought into slide contact with the inner circumferential surface 2a of the casing 2 accompanied by the rotation of the rotary shaft 3 and which is arranged within a fixed width. Reflux grooves 30d, 43 which are closed when the rotary shaft 3 is rotated in a braking force exhibiting direction and through which viscous liquid 6 is passed when the rotary shaft 3 is rotated in a reverse direction, are arranged at least either of the rotary shaft 3 or the vane 4.
