PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for hydrogenating under reduced pressures an aromatic amine to produce the corresponding symmetric dialicyclic amine. SOLUTION: This method comprises hydrogenating an aromatic amine under a pressure of 0.5-50 bar in the presence of a base-treated noble metal-carrying catalyst to obtain the corresponding symmetric dialicyclic amine; wherein the carrier of the above catalyst is previously coated with salt(s) or oxide(s) of Cr, Mo, W, Mn and/or Re, or a mixture thereof, the resulting carrier is activated with Rh in the presence or absence of other noble metal(s) selected from the group consisting of Ir, Ru, Os, Pd and/or Pt and then impregnated with a soluble acid to effect complete or partial neutralization of the base.
