MATURE TYPE PROTEIN HAVING ANTAGONISTIC ACTIVITY FOR BONE MORPHOGENETIC PROTEIN

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a mature type protein having antagonistic actions on a bone morphogenetic protein. SOLUTION: This mature type protein having an antagonistic activity for a bone morphogenetic protein is obtained by converting at least one residue in methionine residue or tryptophan residue present in an amino acid sequence of a mature type human MP52 into a hydrophilic group according to a chemical modification or substituting the residue with a hydrophilic amino acid residue or a polar amino acid residue. The chemical modification of the methionine residue is carried out by an oxidation or an alkylation. The chemical modification of the tryptophan residue is conducted by an arylsulfenylation. The resultant mature type protein is useful as a therapeutic agent or a prophylactic agent for metabolic diseases accompanying heterotropic ossification or calcification. Furthermore, the mature type protein is useful as a reagent for screening a drug competitive with the bonding of the bone morphogenetic protein to a receptor thereof or in an evaluation system.
