PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly rearrange mail without causing erroneous sorting by sorting mail according to information written thereon to accumulate at a respective sorting box and by displaying and cotrolling the order of picking up. SOLUTION: Mail supplied from a supply section 1 is taken out piece by piece from a taking-out section 2 under the control of a central control circuit. The state of the mail taken out, such as the length, the pitch of taking out, etc., is checked, and mail affecting the taking out are discharged to a transport posuture defect accumulation section 3. The bar code of normal mail is read with a bar code reading section 4, and the mail is sorted according to the bar code into the objective sorting box 6 at a step pass section 5. When the first pass comes to an end, an operator operates an ending switch. The second pass picks up mail from the sorting box 6 according to the on-off switching order of an LED for guidance of a temporary storage box 7 and transfers the mail to the supply section 1. Thus, mail is rearranged without causing erroneous sorting.
