METHODS FOR GENERATING SIDE INFORMATION IN THE PRESENCE OF TIME SELECTIVE FADING

PURPOSE: The side information in the presence of time selective fading is provided to generate reliablity information for reducing loss of signals and capacity by fading. CONSTITUTION: In TDMA communication system, a method for decoding digitally encoded commumication signals transmitted over a fading channel consists of following steps. A sequence of test bits transferred a receiver are transmitted in each TDMA slots. A mathematical distance such as a Hamming or Euclidean distance among received sequence in correspondance with transferred sequence of test bits is calculated and used to determine reliability information indicative of the reliability of the bits or symbols in a received time slot. Alternatively, a concatenated coding scheme can be used to transmit digital communication signals. Reliability information can be generated using the inner code and the output of the inner decoder.
