PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a main rope exchange method for elevator reducing work time by using a compact and inexpensive main rope hold tool having a simple structure. SOLUTION: In a main rope exchange method for elevator, a car and a new main rope 6a are held using a main rope hold tool 32 which increases a tightly binding force acting on the new main rope 6a as a load applied between the car and the new main rope 6a increases. This main rope hold tool 32 is a net having a hollow tubular part 32b constituted by braiding strings like a hollow tube, a hanger part 32a which is an endless ring is provided at one end of the hollow tubular part, and an inside diameter of the hollow tubular part 32b is reduced by applying a tensile force between the other end 32c of the hollow tubular part 32b and the hanger part 32a.
