PURPOSE: Novel hollow building blocks, in general and in particular, a method for use in the construction of bomb-blast and gas permeably resistant walls is provided. CONSTITUTION: A lightweight hollow building block is used to construct a blast resistant and gas impermeable barrier wall. The block(2) comprises oppositely disposed spaced apart walls connected by bridging elements forming interconnected horizontal and vertical voids and the block has the walls formed from a mixture of mineralized wood shavings and concrete. The gas impermeable bridging element comprises metal or other rigid gas impermeable plates(16) or bars permanently embedded in the opposite parallel walls. And rods are journaled through holes in the walls and capped on the exterior side of the walls.
