PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure a size of a recording medium for carrying out optimum control even when printing is carried out on a recording medium with a different size from that of a fixed-format sheet by controlling a printing process to the recording medium on the basis of a measurement result by means of a measurement means measuring a size of the recording medium. SOLUTION: When it is determined that there is no normal printing demand, a paper size measurement instructing button in an operation unit 17 is pressed, and a standby for a paper size measurement instruction based on transmission or the like of a paper size measurement instruction from a host computer direction is set. If it is determined there is a paper size measurement instruction, conveyance of recording paper for paper size measurement is started, and by means of a paper feed sensor 3c, detection of the front edge of the recording paper conveyed on a conveying passage is monitored. That is, it is determined whether the paper feed sensor 3c detects the front edge of the conveyed recording paper or not, and if the front edge of the recording paper is detected, a printing action complying with the measured paper length is carried out on a printing demand. |
