PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst capable of carrying out desulfurization of gasoline while keeping the properties of the gasoline, provide a method for hydrogenating and desulfurizing gasoline fraction using the catalyst, and provide desulfurized gasoline and gasoline composition. SOLUTION: This catalyst comprises either group VIII metals of the periodic table and phosphorus deposited on alumina or group VIII, group VIB metals of the periodic table, and phosphorus deposited on alumina. In this case, the catalyst has a specific surface area of 280 m2/g or higher, the fine pore diameter of 50Åor longer, and fine pore volume of 0.5 cc/g or higher and a hydrogenating and desulfurizing method using the catalyst is provided and a gasoline composition is obtained by desulfurization.
