PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device is provided to secure an operation without forming an excessive layout for a data buffer. CONSTITUTION: In a semiconductor memory device, first and second memory array groups(A1,A2) have a plurality of cell arrays(2) and a plurality of sense amplifier strings(3), respectively. A plurality of data buses(GDB) are formed over the cell arrays(2) and the sense amplifier strings(3). In each cell array group(A1,A2) is formed a transfer switch string(7) which is composed of a transfer switch(6) coupled to one end of each data bus(GDB). The transfer switch(6) is formed with a layout pitch of an interval of the data buses(GDB). At each cell array group is a data buffer(5) shared by the first and second cell array groups(A1,A2) and which is formed in double a layout pitch of the transfer switch(6).
