PURPOSE: An apparatus for reading or writing optical recording carriers is provided to control both delay elements and the time of delay elements and to apply the unification of output to a phase detector. CONSTITUTION: A light source(1) generates light beam and transmits it to optical recording carriers (4). An object lens(3) forms a focus on the optical recording carriers(4) through concentrating the light beam. And then, tracking signal(TS) is transmitted to a drive(6), and the output signals from region(A,B,C,D) are transmitted to delay members(7,8,9,10) exposed between the photo detector(5) and phase detector(14), which include delay times that can be variably set. The delay members output the delayed signals(A,B,C,D), and the delayed signals are transmitted to a circuit arrangement and the two outputs(12,13) from the circuit arrangement are transmitted to phase detector. The apparatus according to this invention is used as a playback or recording apparatus for optical recording carriers, such as CDs, CD-ROMs, CD-Is, CD-Rs, DVDs, DVD-ROMs, DVD-Rs, etc.
