PURPOSE: A method and device are provided to receive the source data in high speed by not requiring the on-line collection process which takes long time and to complete the recording within a short time. CONSTITUTION: A device comprises a host(202), a storage site(204, 210), a tape string device(208), and a meta data storing device(216). The host includes a storage controller which is connected to the host, and a target storage which is connected to the storage controller. The host maintains the meta data which selects the logical unit of the data included in the target storage. The storage controller maintains the directory which divides the space into storage space, uncollected free space, collected free space and the space in use. A method comprises a step of the host receiving the input including the specification of the logical unit related to the source data and the source data, and a step of the host ordering the storage controller to divide the directory according to the space usage.
