PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for stabilizing a glyoxylic acid-based polymer enabling the polymer to be stably isolated and purified in high yield. SOLUTION: This method for stabilizing a glyoxylic acid-based polymer comprises reaction of the polymer composed of structural unit of the general formula (R1 is a 1-18C alkyl, a 2-18C alkenyl or an aromatic hydrocarbon group) with a compound destined to be the terminal group of the polymer in the presence of an acidic catalyst followed by adding a basic compound at 10-200 mol% based on the acidic catalyst to the reaction system, wherein the basic compound is more pref. an alkanolamine, esp. pref. triethanolamine.
