PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water glass for welding material capable of increasing qualities of a coating substance and a flux, improving productivity of a coated arc welding rod using the coating material and flux and improving weldability in welding using the obtained welding rod or flux and a method for producing the water glass. SOLUTION: This water glass for welding material has 10-2,000 wt.ppm total carbonate amount. The total carbonate amount of the water glass for a welding material can be reduced, for example, by a process for adding Ca(OH)2 to a water glass solution to provide a raw material and a process for removing carbonate ion fixed by Ca(OH)2 from the water glass solution to provide the raw material.
