<p>PURPOSE: A fibers included of a glass transition temperature (Tg) making them more suitable for certain fiber applications such as filters for filtration of hot gases, and an incorporation of naphthalate units in PET provides for a polyester with improved thermal, oxidative and hydrolytic stability. CONSTITUTION: A fiber is a polyester fiber comprising aromatic ester units of at least terephthalate and 2,6-naphthalate, and preferably where the 2,6-naphthalate units comprise about 10 mole percent to about 90 mole percent of the total aromatic ester units in the polyester, and wherein the fiber has been heat shrunk. Heat shrunk fibers is in the form of a single filament or a multi-filament fiber. The fiber is also articles of manufacture containing such fibers such as yarns, threads, carpet yarns and non-woven fabrics.</p> |
