PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the subject novel substituted pyrrolidine that shows high stereo selectivity and is useful as an asymmetric source for synthesizing an optically active alcohol of high purity in high yield. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R1 is a branched alkyl, a group of formula II (R4 is an alkyl or an aryl) or the like; R2 is individually an alkoxy or may be incorporated together to form an alkylenedioxy or the like; and R3 is H, benzyl or the like], typically (2R,3S,4S,5R)-N-benzyl-2,5-bis(tert.-butyldimethylsilyloxymethyl)-3,4- dimethoxy-pyrrolidine. The compound of formula I is prepared by, for example, converting D-mannitol into (2R,3S,4S,5 R)-N-substituted benzyl-3,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(hydroxmethyl)pyrrolidine in a known manner, allowing tert.-butyldimethylsilyl chloride or the like to react with the product, followed by reaction of the product with methyl iodide or ethyl bromide.
