PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pasty aqueous dispersion including a polyvalent metal hydroxide in large amount, good in dispersion stability for a long period, and further to provide a producing method thereof. SOLUTION: This pasty aqueous dispersion comprises (A) 16-40 wt.% ethylene- unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer containing 5-30 wt.% unsaturated carboxylic acid, based on the amount of the whole dispersion, (B) a counter cation in an amount capable neutralizing the carboxyl group of the copolymer A, (C) 80-300 pts.wt. polyvalent metal hydroxide based on 100 pts.wt. copolymer A, and (D) 0.1-20 pts.wt. alcoholic hydroxyl group-containing compound providing <=200 mPa.s viscosity as 30% aqueous solution and having >=60 molecular weight.
