PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing an industrially useful dilithium salt of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole having a wide-ranging usage as a metallic surface-treating agent, an additive for a lubricating oil, a raw material monomer for a plastic for a high refractive index use, an electrode material for a lithium electric battery, and a raw material for a medicine or an agrochemical, or an intermediate therefore, having excellent heat stability. SOLUTION: A dilithium salt dihydrate of 2.5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole represented by chemical formula (1) is heated to >=200 deg.C, and dehydrated and dried, or reacted by using metallic lithium, lithium hydride or lithium ethoxide under a nonaqueous condition to produce the objective dilithium salt of 2,5- dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole represented by chemical formula (2).
