PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control whether document stop position adjusting mode is started or not in response to ADF opening and closing and the results of detection of a tray document so as to improve the operability. SOLUTION: A reference sheet cut to a normal dimension is set on a document tray and a register position adjusting mode key is pressed so that the operation advances to document stop position adjusting mode. When an ADF opening and closing sensor of an ADF 300 is off (a condition in which the ADF is open), the operation waits for next operation, and when the ADF opening and closing sensor is turned on, whether a document is set on the ADF 300 or not is judged based on the results on the detection of a document setting sensor. When it is judged that there is the reference sheet, one sheet is supplied. When it is judged that a stop position is not within a scope of reference stop position, an operator checks a stop position of the reference sheet which stops on a platen temporarily or confirms it using a stop position confirmation jig, etc. When the operator judges that a compensation must be done, the inputs a compensation amount using ten keys, and the value is used as compensation data.
