METHOD FOR ENCODING OUTLINE AND APPARATUS

PURPOSE: A method for encoding an outline and apparatus are provided to reduce an amount of a transmission data as effectively approximating using a poly approximation an outline of an object presented by an image signal using an improved peak detection method. CONSTITUTION: A method for encoding an outline and apparatus include eight procedures. A first procedure is to detect a starting peak in outline comprising a large number of outline pixels. A second procedure is to select a pair of the peak adjacent between the detected peaks comprising the starting peak. A third procedure is to generate a line segment connecting the pair of the peak using the large number of pixels. A fourth procedure is to expend each pixel on the line segment and generate a band segment using a critical value established in advance. A fifth procedure is to detect an outline segment corresponding to the line segment from the outline. A sixth procedure is to match the outline segment to the band segment. A seventh procedure is to expend the band segment and decide a new peak locating between pairs of peak on the outline. An eighth-procedure is to repeat the second procedure through the seventh procedure until a peak information which designates a position of all peaks on the outline is provided as all peaks on the outline is detected.
