PURPOSE: LCD solves an alignment problem based on a magnitude of a pre-tilt angle, and has a good display quality. CONSTITUTION: LCD includes a pair of substrates(1,2), a mantic liquid crystal(9) inserted between the substrates(1,2). alignment control layers(7,8) are formed to inner surface of each substrate, has a cross-section area of a saw-tooth shape having a slope of a predetermined angle. alignment films(5,6) cover the alignment control layers(7,8). A smectic liquid crystal layer inserted between the substrates. A saw-tooth slope of alignment control layer of one substrate is not parallel to that of another alignment control layer. Thereby, the LCD solves an alignment problem based on a magnitude of a pre-tilt angle, and has a good display quality.
