PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automate work for rotating a strip coil on cradle rolls and stopping its tail end in an arbitrary position with a device for surely detecting the tail end in spite of the diameter of the coil and automatically stopping it in a prescribed position. SOLUTION: This device for detecting the tail end of the strip coil and for automatically stopping the tail end is constituted of the cradle rolls 2 on which the strip coil 1 is placed and rotated, one noncontact type range finder 3 which is arranged being separated in the direction orthogonally crossed to the width direction of the strip coil 1 to be placed on these cradle rolls 2, detecting part 4 provided with a mechanism for adjusting the measurement axis of the range finder so as to orthogonalize to the center axis of taking-up of the strip coil 1, signal processor 5 for processing distance measuring signals from the range finder 3, controller 6 for executing the operation of tail end stopping position and output of cradle roll stopping command, and cradle roll driving device 7.
