PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a data quantity and to reduce a load required for encoding and decoding processing by adding positional information to each area with significant information to unnecessitate encoding in an area excepting for it at the time of compress-encoding image data. SOLUTION: This method is for encoding image data expressing the original image of a prescribed unit. The method is formed of a step of extracting at least one nearly rectangular data areas 21 to 24 including significant data, a step of forming positional data (S1, K1, W1, H1) showing positions in the original picture to each area 21 to 24 and encoded image data obtained by encoding image data in the data areas by a prescribed method, and a step of arraying positional data and encoded image data in a prescribed order to output as encoding data expressing the original image of the prescribed unit.
