PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor capable of exactly detecting the direction of a document even in the case of the so-called negative image with black or gray back while writing characters in white. SOLUTION: In S1601, when a copy key on a control panel is turned on, in S1602, an original is pre-scanned. In this case, read image data are expressed as a histogram in S1603. In S1604, it is automatically discriminated from the prepared histogram whether the original is of ordinary image type (positive original) or inverted image type (negative original). Next, in S1605, main scanning for image formation is performed and when the original is judged negative by the discrimination in S1604, image data are inverted (S1607). Next, in step S1608, concerning the inverted image data, the document direction is discriminated.
