Copying method for CDRoms and DVD discs uses unique serial number permanently recorded on every disc to prevent un-authorised copying

The system enables certain source discs to be protected against copying. The method for controlling the copying of digital data from one data support to another uses a serial number which is written on the target support. This serial number is read before data is written on to the support. The serial number is written in a manner which prevents falsification of the number. Each serial number is unique to the support, such that the probability of the same serial number occurring on the source data support and the target data support is very small. The data may be encoded using an encryption algorithm with a secret key, such as a D.E.S. or and R.S.A. key. The encryption may be function of the serial number.
