<p>1,158,146. Coating pigments. LAPORTE TITANIUM Ltd. 16 Aug., 1966 [20 Aug., 1965], No. 35848/65. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C4] Particles of a pigment (e.g. TiO 2 , 5i0 2 , blanc fixe, BaCO 3 , ZrO 2 , ZnO, Al 2 O 3 , or chrome yellow) are coated by contacting with a compound of the cycloalkane series containing a hydroxyl group directly attached to a ring carbon atom and at least two hydroxyalkyl groups. The organic compound is used alone (if it is liquid) or in a solvent (e.g. an alcohol, acetone or water) in an amount of 0-01 to 5% preferably 0-1 to 1'0% based on the weight of the pigment, which is preferably in the form of slurry with 30-65% solids, the treatment being carried out between 100 and 180‹ C., preferably 105-130‹ C. The organic compound may be 2,2,6,6-tetramethylol cyclohexanol; 2,2,6,6- tetramethylol 4-methylcylohexanol; 2,2,5,5- tetramethylol cyclopentanol; 2,2,6,6-tetramethylol 3,4-dimethylcyclohexanol or 2,2,6,6- tetra-(3<SP>1</SP>-hydroxypropyl) cyclohexanol. The pigment is preferably anaton or rutile TiO 2 which has been coated with hydrous oxides of Al, Ti and/or Si.</p> |
