PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make commonly answerable regardless of types of external devices by making the storage area of a controller have a control information on the processing or the answering method in every logical unit consisting of an optical data range. SOLUTION: The attribute storing area 8 of a shared memory 7 has the information on the attributes of logical volumes 9-11, and the handling information on the volumes 9-11 are stored in the area 8. If any one of volumes 9-11 is accessed when a processor 5 or 6 processes the request of a host 3, the processing is carried out by referring to the information on the handling method of the relevant logical volume that is stored in the area 8. This processing result is reported to the host 3. As a result, a disk controller 4 can perform the same processing or answering to the requests of hosts 3 as long as the same contents of requests are confirmed when plural hosts 3 are connected to the controller 4.
