PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable highly accurate bidirectional read and to attain improvement in reading speed by bidirectionally reading image data of a bidirectional error correction image on a read member, comparing the image data at forward reading with those at backward reading and correcting the bidrectional errors. SOLUTION: An image scanner part 101 is mounted on a carriage 102 and bidirectionally reads image data for a bidirectional error correction image by making it undergo reciprocating motion a specified area including a read member 109. Then, image data at forward reading are compared with image data backward reading, an error correction value is calculated, and the bidirectional error is corrected by using this calculated error correction value. Here, the read image data at the time of forward reading and the image data at the time of backward reading are stored respectively, and the bidirectional error can be corrected by processing the stored image data at the time of forward reading, by using the calculated error correction value.
