PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image excellent in gloss and color reproducibility without winding a recording medium round a roll even in the case of using a recording paper whose surface is coated with a thermoplastic resin layer by narrowing the width of one of a pair of rolls which contacts the recording medium than the width of the recording medium in the axial direction of the roll. SOLUTION: The intermediate transfer body 30 is supported by a second roll 2-2 and a support roll, and moves in circle while holding superimposed toner images on its surface. In the pair of rolls 2-1 and 2-2, the second roll 2-2 which contacts a recording medium P has a roll width W2 that is narrower than the width W3 of the recording medium P in the axial direction of the roll. Also, the second roll 2-2 which contacts the recording medium P has a groove all the way round the periphery of the roll, in a portion corresponding to at least one of both ends of the recording medium P in the axial direction of the roll which recording medium is in the state of being nipped between the pair of rolls 2-1 and 2-2.
