SEAWATER RESISTANT COMMUNICATION CABLE WITH WATERPROOF MATERIAL DISPOSED IN CORE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication cable which passes a 1 m L type submersion test in seawater by forming a water intercepting structure between an outer jacket and buffer tubes in a cable to prevent the flowing of seawater in the cable between the buffer tubes and the protective jacket. SOLUTION: A substrate 20 loosely containing a releasable high water absorbing material, e.g. a tape or yarn is disposed between buffer tubes 12 and an outer jacket 16 in a cable 10. When the jacket 16 is broken and seawater enters the cable 10, at least part of the high water absorbing material is floated from the substrate 20 and expands. The expanded high water absorbing material deposits in the space 24 between the buffer tubes 12 and the jacket 16 to form a mechanical barrier or dam in the space 24 and the further penetration of seawater is prevented.
