PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inspecting device for paper sheets which is capable of discriminating whether paper sheets are good or bad fast, stably and also with high accuracy. SOLUTION: Laser beam sources 11 and 12 perform linear beam scanning of the surface of carried paper sheets 10, an extracting part 21 extracts characteristic quantity data showing relative change from an electric signal corresponding to reflected beam and transmitted beam from sensors 15 to 18, a multivariate analyzing part 22 calculates Mahalanobis distance about the extracted data, and a discriminating part 23 discriminates whether the paper sheets are good or bad based on the distance and the characteristic quantity data.
