PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a computer system capable of giving the merits of a standard UART interface to a non-standard device. SOLUTION: A computer system has software UART uses a standard operating system protocol for minimizing the possibility of I/O competition between a serial device 105 and a UART and a non-standard serial device 205 for executing communication through the UART emulation. A COM driver 220 capable of substituting a standard COM driver in an operating environment has UART emulation. The COM driver 220 determines the device address of a COM port I/O slot to be used for the UART, sends a prescribed pattern to an ISA bus in order to express the arrival of the device address and supplies a value expressing a device address not to be used for the UART to set up the device address of a non-standard device on the ISA bus.
